Didn't want to carry a water filter, so had to refill at Skyland Lodge. Could have hit it at mile 8 or 20. Chose the latter, which meant going counter clockwise on the loop. Also meant that the steepest miles of the hike would be the last 3, all treacherous downhill, most of which I had to do after sunset. In addition, I did the Old Rag scramble on the descent while most hikers were doing it on the ascent. This meant that a couple of times, I had to stand and wait for queues of oncoming scramblers to clear. Once, I even did something very tricky just to avoid the nervous trembling newbies who were stuck immobile on a narrow down climb (for them). One misstep from any of them would have taken me down too. Otherwise, pretty perfect day. Temperature around 45 at the start, and maxed out at 70. Took care of my nutrition and hydration very well, and nothing ever hurt. Had to stow poles while scrambling for those ~300 feet, but otherwise, I think they really helped in this terrain with lots of pebbles and rocky steps. Also good decision to go in proper hiking boots and not trail runners. Thanks to all the folks who gave great tidbits of information in alltrails reviews. Got to the parking lot in the morning with less than 5 spots to spare. Only place where I couldn't figure out the trail was right after I filled up at Skyland Lodge, so just walked along Skyline drive from there to Timber Hollow Overlook, from where I caught the Appalachian Trail pretty easily.
