Tatoosh - Pretty Damn Good Backup Plan

An all time day playing in the mountains.

Drove up and planned on getting to the trailhead at 8 but then got stuck in Bay Area traffic (classic) and arrived at 10:30. Had some great existential conversations about AI interspersed with rocking to some bangers (thanks for introducing us to Wellerman Daniel Huang… we listened to it like 30 times). The weather forecast looked super warm, so we were worried about climbing Avalanche Gulch in the sun. Rather than taking a dirt nap, we just decided to pull the all nighter and start climbing right away. After a bit of messing around with gear we departed around midnight and made quick progress to the top of the thumb. Skinning started getting icey around 10k right before Helen Lake. Put on the ski crampons at Helen and managed another 1200 vertical feet before putting on the boot crampons and ice axe. Ran into Jamie V halfway up the gulch. Once we got to the rest Dan Sanders got quite cold so I lent him a layer and we sheltered from the wind as the sun came up and warmed our bones. After that we booted up Misery Hill, but in hindsight should’ve put ski crampons on and skinned up. We then climbed to the summit, and Dan optimistically told me we could ski from there despite horrendous wind blown snow. However, we were still waiting for Christian and wanted to let the snow soften up. Feeling the effects of no sleep, we monopolized an alcove just off the summit and laid down for 4 hours and slept on our skis / backpacks. First 14k summit nap of my life. Finally it was corn o’clock (noon) and we skied some horrible sastrugi off the summit. After that we ripped 3.5k of continuous corn through the red bluffs. What an absolute stunner of a line. Ran into Jamie again right below Helen Lake. At that point everything was slushy and mank and low angle so we just tried to get out to the car as efficiently as possible. 

Once we got out, went straight to Drizzle (formerly Yak Shack) and ate our faces off along with everybody from the mountain. None of us were lucid enough to drive home so we went straight to the city park, took an elite 2 hour dirt nap, and then rallied back to the city.
