After months of mediocre Strava content, I decided it was time to give my Strava followers something they deserve. And what better way to do this than to dip my toes back into the NEU8 game with Thomas Everest ! The day started innocent enough as we gained a solid 3k over the first 4.5 miles up to our first summit of the day; Lower Wolfjaw. From here all the way to Marcy, the terrain would range from mud to slick slabs to gnarled and crusty New England roots in a harsh undulating traverse of the Great Range. Things were going well until I ran out of water on top of Armstrong and Thomas funneled down his liquid stash shortly after on Gothics. The next few hours proved to be a tense, sweat less, and dizzying march to a water source we could only hope was as real in life as it looked on the topo. (Water source pictured below). Yes! It’s real water!!! Not muddy water we squeezed out of moss for Thomas but real life fresh and cold creek water! After this said water and my incredible Gushers rejuvenated us, we cranked up the last two summits of the day, Haystack and Marcy. From here we had an all downhill 10 miles to get back to the car. After a few steep miles to get off the mountain, we finally found rock and mud free trail and started dropping sub-20 minute miles. Oooooh we’re booling now! A few dark miles on the road after a failed hitchhiking attempt brought us back to where it all began! A pretty nails hike that was only marred by the mud and lack of views, but legs felt shockingly good. (They are very tired as I write this). Some highlights were seeing 3 bears, rescuing a dog, finding water, and knocking out a New England classic with the carrier of boats and logs, Thomas Everest! Excited for some more epic adventures this summer!
