Warmup Run

Today’s goal was just go out and have fun. The race is a 2 lap course and my plan was the first lap just go chill and pretty easy. When the second lap hit I would increase effort to tempo to a hard race pace depending on how I felt and who was near me. I didn’t want to go all out from the start bc I just raced a 50k about 5 weeks ago and started doing workouts for the first time this year about 4 weeks ago. Avoiding injury was priority one. Got out this morning and was having some pretty rough stomach issues and was concerned. Thankfully that subsided once the gun went off. I instantly went to the front and never had anyone near me for the rest of the race. It was a cool morning with some rain and the course was quite muddy. On the first lap the mud wasn’t too bad since I was the first person to hit it. When I came to through the halfway I knew I was having a good day and had a lot left to give. The issues of the day started around this point. I’ve been practicing my hydration in the heat all summer so with such a cool and cloudy morning all the electrolytes I was taking started to be an issue. I had to dump my bottles and fill with water at aid stations to manage this. The course was wayyyyy slower the second lap because of all the mud being trampled by everyone on lap one. I really struggled to pick up the pace since I couldn’t get any traction in the mud and was picking up tons of weight. Even still I was going at a good pace but I didn’t have the mental drive to suffer very hard when I was solo. The cons of being so far ahead is it’s very hard to push yourself. I ended up doing the second lap about 2 minutes faster than the first and finished with a new course record by around 17 minutes and won by roughly an hour. I’m happy with the day but I’m excited because I know I have a lot left to give in races and faster days ahead.
