Pivoted last moment from Apostles to Winfield Pk/Virginia Pk. Some moderate bushwhacking up the old mining road. Got to a wicked gully, and we went up it. It was narrow, solid, and fun at first, then got looser, down sloping rock, and more hardpan the higher up we went, and became terrifying in every way-important holds breaking off, rocks crashing down the gully, and slipping on hardpan over a thousand+ foot funnel. Locked in just enough to get up and out of there without completely breaking down. So thankful for everyone for helping coax each other through the moves safely. Definitely a top 5 scariest moments in the mountains sort of gully. We almost made it to Winfield Pk, but turned around just short because we were exhausted, physically and mentally.
Watch ran out of battery shortly after starting the descent. Took the mining road all the way back down. Had to cross a couple gullies on the way out, but they weren’t nearly as bad as what we’d been through. Terrifying to look up and see where we’d been. At least the hike out after that was uneventful.
So, lessons learned: do the hike you planned on, and if you don’t, make sure you know your route well, and don’t go up gullies
