SPOG up and out before sunrise. Food bag still has like 4 days worth, oof. All the good berries are no more, just bitter cherries and buckthorn berries. Bit of morning smoke, warm. Mild terrain, views. Old white cedars, tall ponderosas. Wind, smoke pick up. Few rain clouds out of nowhere, light sprinkle just as I get to the swimming lake, dip anyways. Wait for Sunset, no show, keep going. 8 horses/4 people/1 dog pass, next few miles dodging horse poop and hoof prints. Ridge, 5G, Root Fire grew to 700ac, 0% contained, half mile upwind of trail, Matt/Ashley had to yellow blaze out, Sunset catches up, we’ll probably get off trail tomorrow. Push to campsite by sunset, big Shasta view!, cotton candy clouds between layers of smoke, sunset on the other side of the ridge. Spooky lightning, seems far. No bugs, cowboy camp 🤠 forecast changes, lightning approaching, don’t want to be on saddle/ridge… scouting mission down hill, ok spot, too far. Move tent under a shorter ponderosa a bit off the ridge. Arrowhead 135 application. Bed
